SIGHTSEEING

CORUND

Man from Corund composing legends and tales quickly reached the “beginnings”. Here is a short quote from József Bartha`s manuscript entitled: Monograph of Township Corund (1942): “I heard this tale from a very old man when I was a child: a very long time ago the only lord of the region lived in the castle of Firtos. When his children became grown-ups, they all requested their inheritance. The eldest asked to be given land according to his age (in Hungarian: koromhoz). This is how Corund was established.”

Corund is a big and important commune in Harghita County, the former Udvarhelyszék, on the South of the Salt Region. The township is one of the most famous and well known Transylvanian communes. Its name is inseparable from popular ceramics; it is one of Transylvania`s folk pottery center. In Corund pottery represents the living on of folk art, the continuation of traditions and also the prospering of locals. Corund keeping its traditions is a prototype of the modernizing szekler village and its bases on pottery industry, trading, tourism and its cultural role is growing.

Corund is not special only because of its folk art, but also because of the natural resources of the area.

Some famous natural values of the township are: the snail hill, which is today a nature conservation area, the legendary places of the hills surrounding the commune (Likas-stone, Mountain Firtos) or the healing mineral water springs at the boundaries of the village. Although the former Corund bath is only a memory today, it represented one of Transylvania`s most important baths. All these natural resources give the commune`s originality, varied facet and touristic value.

Another important folk activity besides making ceramics is the processing of tinder which is a very rare occupation. We can meet people who do wood carving and weaving professionally and women who do needlework and embroidery contributing with their products to the increase of the commune`s folk art value.

A constant sight is the craft`s fair along the main road.
